October — Who wants to visit a haunted house?

We were thinking of what we could do for October and it was suggested that a group visit to a haunted house might be fun.

So I’m looking into it.  Also, there is a museum of mortuary science.  Perhaps doing both in the same day might be fun, with dinner in between. What kind of food does everyone like?

The Magna Carta

About ten people were in the group to see the Magna Carta.  We discovered there are two gift shops.  Next time we meet by the whirlygig or whatever that thing is called.

Not speaking for anyone else, but I learned a lot. I didn’t realize Eleanor of Aquitaine had so many kids.  I also didn’t know that the Magna Carta standardized measurement (Thanks John Moore for pointing that out).  Nor exactly how John had become king. (This was also the time of Robin Hood.  Just saying.)

Hey! Anybody Wanna Go See “Guardians of the Galaxy”?

I know that we’ve been talking about only doing things every couple of months and our next event is seeing the Magna Carta, but I happened to notice that the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” opens that same weekend.  I’m kind of wondering if anyone would want to go to see that as a group that weekend.

Ice Cream Social a Big Hit

Wow!  There sure were a lot of people waiting for ice cream when I finally got there!  Sorry about the delay.  I was doing Apollocon Stuff until after I should have left to go get the ice cream.  I thought I had time, but I wound up getting stuck in traffic and it rained and I forgot the syrups and the whipped cream.

But what an event!  Thank you all for coming out and eating ice cream and an extra special thanks for those who chose to join our merry band.  We gained a bunch of new associates.  I’ll be getting associate cards out to y’all as soon as we find where I put them.

You can still sign up to be an ARGH associate and you can still get in on our group trip to see the Magna Carta on August 3.  Just follow the “Become an Associate” link on the main page.

Save on ARGH t-shirts

Use coupon code 20JIVE at checkout to save 20% on your t-shirt purchase at our Spreadshirt Store.  The fine print is that it applies to “premium” shirts but doesn’t explain what those are.  I believe several types of ARGH shirt are eligible but don’t know which ones. All I can tell you is try it.

It’s been a busy month for the Big Kahuna

Many of you know that I’m on the ApolloCon committee, and this year I’m doing the program book.  Since that’s due right before the convention and the convention is coming up in (*gasp*) three days!  I’ve been going nuts doing editing and typesetting and exercising my graphic arts capability and stuff like that.

That hasn’t left a lot of time for ARGH things, which is why the space wrangler has been doing all the work, but never fear I’ll be back after ApolloCon and I’ll keep you up to date with happenings around Houston.

Gonna See the Magna Carta

ARGH is going on an expedition to see the Magna Carta and YOU are invited.

We will be meeting at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Sunday, August 3 at 11:00 am.

An original of the Magna Carta is on display at HMNS, along with the only known example of the King’s Writ, which is a letter from King John proclaiming the signing of the Magna Carta.

And you can see it for $15.  All you have to do is fill out this form and we will contact you.  If you are paying via PayPal we will generate an invoice to the e-mail address specified. If you choose to send us a check, we will contact you with instructions.  If you wish to pay in cash, come to the Ice Cream Social and we’ll be happy to accept your payment.

Note that this offer is only available to ARGH Associates and their closest friends (up to three friends per Associate).  This is the lowest price you can pay to see this exhibit.  The ticket also includes the standard exhibits at HMNS.  You may get a discount some other way, but even HMNS members pay more.  This is a special ARGH deal.

And we had a good time.

I can’t wait until June for ice cream….what can I do?

Okay, so the ice cream social is in June and you want ice cream now. Well, if you have an ice cream maker, it’s easy.

Milky Way Ice Cream (a galactic delight)

  • 7 regular sized Milky Way bars
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can chocolate syrup
  • 1 quart half & half (or cream if you’re living it up)
  • milk

  1. Melt Milky Way bars 4 to 5 minutes in microwave, stirring after each minute. Add condensed milk and Hershey’s syrup and stir. Microwave an additional 1-2 minutes, stir.
  2. Pour into the container of the ice cream maker.  Add half & half then add milk to the fill line.
  3. Churn and freeze according to the instructions for your ice cream maker.

Very simple, very easy, very tasty!
